Cosmetics Europe Releases Guidance on Environmental Claims and Sustainability Labels Related to Cosmetic Products

Cosmetics Europe has released Guidance on Environmental Claims and Sustainability, a document aimed as a tool to aid companies in the assessment of environmental claims made on their cosmetic products considering the requirements under EU Cosmetic Products Regulation (CPR) and EU Consumer Protection Law.

This has been reissued considering regulatory developments within the EU, notably the passing of the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (ECGTD), which amends the Unfair Commercial Practises Directive and Consumer Rights Directive and comes into force from 27 September 2026.

The guidance focuses on the key changes under the ECGTD, including definitions on generic environmental claims such as biobased, vegan=better for the planet, fully biodegradable, natural/organic, claims on future environmental performance and how to navigate label restrictions.
