Meet Melbec: Gemma Morgan

In the next instalment of our ‘Meet Melbec’ series, say hello to our fantastic Technical Manager – Training and Quality, Gemma!

How did you come to work at Melbec Microbiology?

I had been working as a Microbiologist for around 9 years and was looking for a new challenge, a friend of mine was working at Melbec at the time and said they were looking for someone so I went in for an interview and instantly loved it there.

What is your daily focus/role at Melbec Microbiology?

My role at Melbec Microbiology involves working closely with the Quality Manager and all of the laboratory managers to ensure that quality is embedded in everything we do. This includes overseeing training of all staff at Melbec.

What has been your favourite/most exciting project to work on throughout your career?

There have been many exciting and challenging projects that I have worked on in my career, one of the projects I’ve really enjoyed is the creation of the virology laboratories at Melbec during the Covid 19 pandemic. It was amazing to be able to help with setting up the labs, working with experts on getting them up and running and then working towards UKAS accreditation for several of the virology standards we offer. It has been really interesting for me to learn new skills and develop my knowledge in this area.

What has been your proudest moment at Melbec Microbiology so far?

I have had many proud moments at Melbec Microbiology and I’m not sure I could pick just one, but some of the proudest moments include seeing the young people we take on as apprentices or new graduates grow and develop into great laboratory technicians, scientists and managers. We have had several over the years that I have been here that have come on so much and it makes me extremely proud to see their achievements. I’m also extremely proud of the massive team effort put in by all of our team during the Covid 19 pandemic. It was a scary and challenging time for so many, but we pulled together as a team, looked after each other and ensured that testing was performed to the highest standards for our clients.

What do you love most about working at Melbec Microbiology?

I like that it is like a family. The people at Melbec Microbiology make a great team, everyone is pushing for the same goal and everyone is extremely supportive.

What are you most looking forward to in the future?

As someone who has been a part of the Melbec team for a long time and seen a lot of changes and growth over that time I am looking forward to where we go next. Life at Melbec is never boring!
