Meet Melbec: George
Meet Melbec: George
Next in our ‘Meet Melbec’ series we would like to introduce our Senior Full Stack Engineer, George!
How did you come to work at Melbec Microbiology?
I originally joined Melbec during my Placement Year at the University of Salford as part of my degree program to build out a LIMS system in collaboration with the laboratory and begin the process of bringing a layer of automation to Melbec’s testing and reporting. In my initial two and a half years at Melbec I laid down the groundwork for the current LIMS system for QC, Process Water, and Swab testing. I rejoined Melbec in January to work on building out LIMS further to support the growing laboratory, alongside the new Regulatory system with our Regulatory Manager.
What is your daily focus/role at Melbec Microbiology?
Day to day, I work on the LIMS and Regulatory system, adding useful features for our users, ensuring the testing system meets our requirements and keeping the system up to date to defend against modern exploits. I also provide technical support for LIMS so anyone in the business can come to me with issues and I work closely with the lab and our Regulatory Manager to help define the future of LIMS and the Regulatory system and what we are working on next.
What has been your favourite/most exciting project to work on throughout your career?
For me, LIMS has to be one of the best projects I’ve worked on. From defining a data structure to meet the needs of Melbec then and now, to creating a system that has stood up well to a changing and growing environment, it has been a rollercoaster to say the least and the faith and trust put into me by everyone here cannot be overstated.
What has been your proudest moment at Melbec Microbiology so far?
I have had several proud moments at Melbec so far, such as seeing the first LIMS generated report getting sent out to achieving sign off from UKAS on the LIMS system, allowing us to roll it out fully. However, my proudest moment has to be seeing LIMS stand the test of time, it’s very hard to understate how far LIMS has come from being a project worked on as part of a university placement year to being a system that holds millions of data points and is used daily by almost everyone at Melbec to perform their work.
What do you love most about working at Melbec Microbiology?
I love the culture of improvement here at Melbec. Everyone wants to improve not only themselves, but everything that we touch to provide our clients with the best possible service. It also lends itself to a culture of openness, everyone is happy to give you the time of day, to work with you to help understand the systems and processes that allow a system like LIMS to integrate into existing laboratory processes.
What are you most looking forward to in the future?
I’m looking forward to working with the Laboratory in furthering LIMS, to remove blockers and supporting the enhancement of the Quality System. In addition, working to expand the Regulatory System to support our growing portfolio of Regulatory work.
