[UK] HSE Withdraws Proposed Reprotoxic Classification for Tea Tree Oil
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) released its final decision regarding the proposed mandatory classification of tea tree oil under the GB Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.
In a notable shift, HSE has opted not to classify tea tree oil as a Category 1B substance for reproductive toxicity (CMR 1B). This decision diverges from both the findings of HSE’s own technical report and the opinion issued by the European Union’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC).
The classification will be revisited soon through the Article 37A process of the GB CLP framework. This reassessment will allow stakeholders to submit additional scientific data, policy considerations, and socio-economic analyses to support or challenge a future classification proposal.
