Established in 1973, this annual event continues to unite over 143 countries in tackling issues from climate change and pollution to sustainable development and biodiversity loss.
As we mark World Environment Day 2026, Melbec Microbiology is proud to reflect not only on the steps we’ve taken so far, but also on the journey ahead as we continue to embed sustainability into everything we do.
Our Ongoing Commitment: Building on Past Success
Over the past few years, Melbec has implemented a wide range of meaningful environmental initiatives, practical changes that help reduce waste, minimise emissions, and improve the sustainability of our laboratory operations.
Here are some standout achievements from our ongoing environmental programme:
Reducing Plastic Waste & Increasing Reuse
- We recycle and reuse our 30ml glass bottles, significantly reducing transport emissions and waste costs.
- By manufacturing our own neutraliser in 9ml and 450ml bottles, we have lowered CO₂ emissions associated with deliveries and cut plastic waste, while also increasing opportunities for recycling and reuse.
Switching to Sustainable Materials
- Our in‑house sustainability initiative continues to explore ways to replace plastics with recyclable alternatives across daily lab work.
- We’ve switched from traditional hand roll to reusable microfibre cloths, reducing both transportation emissions and plastic waste, and lowering overall paper usage.
- We now use recycled toilet rolls, ensuring that even the smallest consumables are considered in our sustainability journey.
Reducing Energy Consumption
- Installation of light sensors has helped cut unnecessary energy use across our facilities.
- Ongoing monitoring of lab equipment and energy consumption patterns ensures we continue to find new ways to reduce our footprint.
- In the last few years, we’ve also committed to 100% renewable energy, supporting cleaner power generation.
Cleaner Transportation
- We have transitioned our company vehicles from diesel to electric, lowering our carbon emissions while moving toward efficient, environmentally friendly transport methods.
Supporting Global Conservation
- Melbec has contributed to environmental protection beyond the lab by purchasing rainforest land and donating it to conservation efforts, helping protect vulnerable ecosystems for future generations.
These efforts were recognised externally too, with Melbec winning the Energy Efficiency Award, and our Operations Manager receiving the Green Champion Award at the Lancashire Sustainability Awards.
