Meet Melbec: Natalie Callaghan

As we mentioned early in the year we are working to highlight a member of the Melbec Team every so often in a blog post. For this ‘Meet Melbec’ post, we are focusing on our Quality Manager, Natalie Callaghan!

How did you come to work at Melbec Microbiology?

After studying Chemistry and Forensic Science at University, I worked as a Microbiology Technician at Manchester Metropolitan University, and then as a Microbiology Research Technician at University of Manchester. After working in academia for around 9 years, I wanted a new challenge and was excited by the prospect of working within a UKAS accredited laboratory, something I hadn’t previously experienced within my career.

What is your daily focus/role at Melbec Microbiology?

As the Quality Manager, the main focus of my role is to ensure that Melbec Microbiology are meeting UKAS requirements within operations, including overseeing the quality management system, conducting and supporting audits, and developing and implementing procedures for continuous improvement.

What has been your favourite/most exciting project to work on throughout your career?

As a researcher, I participated in a study focused on the microbiome associated with diabetic foot infections. Our goal was to explore innovative treatment approaches, and I am proud to report that our findings were published in a scientific journal – contributing to a published paper was a significant milestone for me and something I am really proud to have achieved.

What has been your proudest moment at Melbec Microbiology so far?

Presenting our work at conferences has been a real highlight of mine so far working at Melbec. I have presented both in London and at SCS Formulate to showcase our work with Vegan alternatives for cosmetic testing. This was a fantastic achievement to be able to represent the company at such events and share the achievements with industry leaders from all over the world.

What do you love most about working at Melbec Microbiology?

The people – Melbec have an excellent team of staff who are always willing to go above and beyond for each other, the business, and our client base. It’s a pleasure to be able to be a part of such a brilliant team!

What are you most looking forward to in the future?

As the Quality Manager, I have been able to showcase my skills to support our accreditations, and I am looking forward to being able to continue to drive the business forward from a quality perspective, adapting to the needs of clients and being able to add more accredited tests to our remit in the future.
